The Big Dig Diaries

Life, lattes & a whole lotta construction.

There are certain sentences we never really expected to say in Palmerston.

“How bad is the traffic?” is one of them.

And yet, here we are.

Palmerston has traffic lights now.

Two of them.

Okay, they're temporary. And yes, they're here because construction is happening at both ends of town. But for a town that normally has exactly zero traffic lights, this feels significant.

We're basically Toronto now.

Welcome to the Big Dig.

Somewhere Between Two Roundabouts

If you haven't heard, Palmerston is currently undergoing a pretty major transformation.

Construction is happening at both ends of town, with two new roundabouts going in — and The Station happens to sit comfortably in the downtown core, right between them.

We've essentially become the filling in a roundabout sandwich.

Getting into town now comes with a few more cones, a temporary traffic light and the occasional moment of wondering, Wait... can I still go this way?

Everyone seems to have their own strategy.

There's the official route.

There's the route your neighbour told you about.

And then there's the route you took once because you saw someone else turn there and figured they must know something you don't.

It's become part of daily life.

We Have a New Favourite Topic

For years, there was one guaranteed conversation starter in the café:

The weather.

Not anymore.

Construction has entered the chat.

Someone comes through the door and within approximately 30 seconds we're discussing which end of town they came through, how long they waited at the light, what they're working on today or whether something has changed since yesterday.

We're all construction experts now.

No qualifications whatsoever. Plenty of opinions.

And honestly, it's kind of funny watching an entire town adjust together.

We make jokes about the lights. We compare routes. We navigate the cones. We get where we're going.

And eventually, everyone seems to end up downtown anyway.

Meanwhile, Life Carries On

That's probably the part we'll remember most.

While all this work is happening around us, regular Palmerston life hasn't stopped.

People are heading to work. Kids are squeezing every last bit out of summer. Businesses are opening their doors. People are meeting for coffee, running errands and stopping to chat.

At The Station, we're doing what we normally do too.

Drinks are being made. Regulars are ordering their usual. Someone is trying the featured drink. Someone else is telling us about whatever happened at the traffic light five minutes earlier.

The Big Dig is happening around everyday life rather than replacing it.

And from our little spot in the middle, we get a pretty good view of all of it.

Made it through the lights?

Congratulations.

You've reached the middle.

We have coffee.

But Here's the Weird Part...

Our daughter is five, almost six.

By the time all of this is finished, there's a pretty good chance she won't really remember Palmerston before the roundabouts.

Think about that.

To her generation, this may simply be what Palmerston looks like.

They won't remember driving straight through the ends of town without thinking about it. They may barely remember the year Palmerston suddenly had traffic lights.

Meanwhile, the rest of us will inevitably become those people.

“You know, there didn't used to be a roundabout there.”

And our kids will politely nod while wondering why we're telling them this.

But that's what makes this strange little chapter worth remembering.

Underneath the construction signs, detours, machinery and approximately seven million orange cones, we're watching our town change in real time.

Right now, it feels unusual.

A little inconvenient.

Occasionally confusing.

And pretty funny.

Years from now, it'll just feel like Palmerston.

So, Welcome to the Big Dig

We're not here to give construction updates. The Town has that covered, and frankly, you probably don't want your infrastructure information from the people making your Strawberry Matcha.

We're just here watching it happen with everyone else.

And maybe that's worth documenting.

Because someday the temporary lights will disappear. The cones will be gone. The roundabouts will just be... the roundabouts.

And we'll probably forget how strange it was when all of this started.

Until then, you'll find us downtown, somewhere between one roundabout and the other.

Today's Palmerston traffic report: We have traffic.
