Fire, Ice & Friendly Rivalries

Winter doesn’t always go to plan — but around here, that’s part of the magic.

January tried its best to freeze us solid. February brought a little drizzle. Somewhere in between, there was a polar vortex, a rescheduled event, and enough “old man cough” to keep every household stocked in honey and lemon.

And still? People showed up.

Minto Fire vs. OPP — The Annual Showdown

If you’ve never experienced the annual Minto Fire vs. OPP hockey game at the Palmerston arena, picture this:

Freezing temperatures outside.

A full arena inside.

Kids running laps around the stands.

Parents catching up between whistles.

Crowds cheering both teams like it’s Game 7.

Entry was by donation, with proceeds going to the Palmerston Food Bank — which somehow makes the rivalry even better. Competitive on the ice. United off it.

Fire scored first. The crowd erupted.

Then OPP came back hard. At one point it was 4–1 for OPP and things were looking… tense.

But the Fire guys weren’t done yet.

Third period.

Push after push at the net.

Three near goals right in front of us.

The entire arena holding its breath.

Fire tied it 4–4 with barely any time left.

The place was electric.

And then — open net.

OPP scored.

The sound in the arena shifted in one second. Gasps. Cheers. Groans. Laughter.

Competitive? Absolutely.

Friendly? Always.

It’s rivalry with purpose.

A packed rink in the middle of winter.

Families, neighbours, clients, friends — all in one place.

That’s the Palmerston way.

Fire & Ice — Family Day Edition

Family Day came with a little drizzle. Not a downpour. Just enough to remind us it’s still February in Ontario.

Did that stop anyone?

Of course not.

We headed over with our daughter and immediately started doing what everyone does at these things — saying hi to everyone.

Waiting in line for face painting.

Running into neighbours.

Parents comparing notes on who’s kid has “the cough.”

Clients stopping Jenn to say they need her.

Kids spotting their friends from across the arena like it’s been years (it’s been 3 days).

Outside, the fire pits glowed against the snow.

Inside, magic shows and performances filled the rink.

Glowing bowling pins flying through the air.

Music outside the arena doors.

Bundled chaos everywhere.

And as the night wrapped up, fireworks lit up the sky anyway.

Because winter here isn’t about perfect conditions.

It’s about participation.
